Avondale, Arizona-The Small-Tooth-Dog Publishing Group of Avondale, Arizona has released three new books for Spring of 2019. A mischievous packrat and his coyote foe share in a battle of wits deep in the moonlit Sonoran Desert. The time-tested fables of Aesop come alive in contemporary retellings accompanied by vibrant, hand-cut art. The ethics, crafting, and techniques of using oral storytelling for public presentations get an in-depth examination in an intriguing reference book of 194 pages. The new books are:
“Don’t Throw Me in the Cholla Patch!” is the newest release from Tucson (Arizona) author Marc Severson. Set in the Sonoran Desert, this tale matches Wood Rat the packrat against his nemesis the Coyote as they both wander the moonlit lands looking for dinner. Coyote thinks the rat will be delicious, and the packrat must use his smoothest talking to get away from Coyote’s sharp teeth. And, whatever else happens, Wood Rat hopes he doesn’t end up on the scary spines of the cholla patch…or does he? Best for grades 4-8.
“The Fox and the Crow: Art and Stories Inspired by Aesop.” Written by Sean Buvala with illustrations by Michelle Buvala, this husband and wife team from Avondale, Arizona bring to life to familiar fables of Aesop and some new creativity to some of the more obscure fables. Young people will find the familiar tale of the “Lion and the Mouse” and also a very different take on the race between “The Tortoise and the Hare.” It’s a book for kids 8 and older that is both fun to read and beautiful to look at it.
“From Audience to Zeal: The ABCs of Finding, Crafting, and Telling a Great Story.” Written by Minnesota author Laura S. Packer, it’s a deep dive into the many facets of public speaking with story in such settings as business, nonprofit, education, and entertainment settings. Laura distills down more than 30 years of experience as storyteller and coach to create a dense, thorough reference book that has the feel of talking with a close friend. Intended for adult audiences.
The Small-Tooth-Dog Publishing Group catalog contains a range of books in the areas of performing arts and creativity for adult audiences. As well, they have several books for children and families. They’re a member of the nationwide Independent Book Publishers Association. The publisher, Sean Buvala, speaks at their events and will be presenting workshops for the organization at their annual meeting in Chicago in April 2019.
